WHAT IS NATIONAL BUSINESS AND TECHNICAL EXAMINATIONS BOARD (NABTEB) AND WHY DO YOU NEED A CERTIFICATE ISSUED BY NABTEB TO PRACTICE IN NIGERIA

NABTEB was established through act 70 of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in August 1993 to take over all public examinations hitherto conducted by Royal Society of Arts RSA, City and Guild of London, WAEC Technical etc; and to conduct all examinations in Nigeria leading to the award of National Technical Certificate NTC, Advanced National Technical Certificate ANTC, National Business Certificate NBC and Advanced National Business Certificate ANBC, National Vocational Certificate NVC and so many others.

It is also empowered by law to conduct Modular Trade Certificate Examinations for artisans and skilled people with the aim of bringing as many Nigerians out of the informal sector into the formal sector to create employment opportunities for Nigerians..

The Board conducts National Common Entrance Examinations into technical colleges and like Institutions...

It conducts research and publish statistics as part of her mandate to assess and improve Technical and Vocational Education in Nigeria and the African continent...

NABTEB is under the leadership of Professor Mrs. Ifeoma Isiugo Abanihe..

WHY NABTEB?
*For those interested in acquiring and practising one skill, vocation or the other artisan associations in Nigeria*

In Nigeria as well as in other advanced nations, technicians are the bedrock of industry and also commerce..

By technicians, I refer to those who have mastered one skill or the other either through informal education/apprenticeship or formally having passed through the four walls of a classroom...

It is important to inform you that Technical and Vocational Education in Nigeria is a professional education that follows a systematic training, certification and licencing or registration process that is based on the laws of Nigeria..

In Nigeria, to practice as a professional craftsman/woman or technician in any trade; you require appropriate certification as approved by the federal government of Nigeria, which shows that you have been trained and possess the skills needed in that field.

Any skills acquired which falls outside this system could well be seen as general education, no matter the level attained, since the outcome cannot lead to licencing and certificates issued to people in this category cannot be compared with NABTEB Technical certificate as stipulated in the National Vocational Qualifications Framework of Nigeria.

What the above implies is that holders of other qualifications who are themselves skilled or highly skilled, as the case may be, cannot refer to themselves as craftsmen/women or master craftsmen/women until they register for and receive a NABTEB Technical certificate...

In Nigeria, people like this are categorised as mere artisans... They are skilled but uncertificated and as such unregistered..

In other words, when an individual has acquired a skill at any other level that is not certified by NABTEB or a relative degree awarding tertiary institution, the person is assumed to be an artisan until he/she sits for NABTEB examinations and is awarded a National Technical Certificate NTC for craftsmen, or the Advanced National Technical Certificate ANTC for master craftsmen/women...

NABTEB certificates at the post basic level are senior school certicates but with an added advantage of also serving as professional certification.. So you can either use it for academic purposes or for professional growth...

NABTEB CERTIFICATES SKILLS FOR WEALTH CREATION AND ECONOMIC SELF RELIANCE..
